BRAIDED
BRAIDED is a two-part series that explores the connection between graphic design methodologies and traditional Black braiding techniques. Part 1 is a poster series that experiments with creating various braid patterns with single braided strands. Through data collection and the identification of relevant sources on hair braiding, shapes were created and illustrated to mimic the braiding patterns of the past, alongside digital manipulation to produce a contemporary set of sequences and structures.
Nonstop
During a poster design summer workshop at the Basel Academy of Art and Design, participants were invited to design a poster that captured the word “nonstop” for an exhibition at the Museum Stapferhaus Lenzburg. Through analyzing insights and definitions of the word “nonstop”, it has been identified as a whole that is opposite to its parts, thereby emphasizing the idea of contrast. This poster highlights dandelions through the lens of nonstop: a plant that changes and spreads its seeds rapidly; however, when blown, it is used to breathe and slow down.
Black Hair As A Symbol of Expression
Through analyzing and dissecting the articles of the CROWN Act, a law aimed at prohibiting discrimination based on hair texture and protective hairstyles, this poster series has been designed utilizing discursive design methodologies to encourage dialogue around hair discrimination in the United States and blend the celebration of beauty within Black communities, while acknowledging historical pain.
